THE HILLHURST HOME

The Hillhurst home benefited from a full second floor renovation including a complete reconfiguring of the master bedroom and ensuite bathroom. The renovation was designed by Place works to completely maximize space and functionality. The upstairs was a fairly dark area prior to the renovations. A unique approach to lighting the area included a solar powered electrical opening skylight, with sun tunnels to provide natural light in the windowless ensuite bathroom. At the top of the stairs a large sitting and entertainment space was created and a large uniquely shaped window was installed to create a feature reading nook.

In the master bedroom, three large windows were installed to brighten the area and offer plenty of natural lighting. A custom full wall of storage was added to the room to maximize space and decrease obstacles for the natural lighting. Finally to make the area more inviting and comfortable a new fireplace with a timber hearth was added. The ensuite renovation included a full tile shower with a glass enclosed that connected seamless with the bathtub surround, and sun tunnels to provide the room with natural lighting.

A Calgary Overlook from Conroy Custom Homes

High on an escarpment overlooking the city of Calgary, the Bow River and the Canadian Rockies beyond, a couple found the perfect spot for a new home that would welcome both the sun and the scenery. They reached out to Jeremy Sturgess and Anita Gunther, from Calgary-based Sturgess Architecture, to help bring their dream to life.

“They asked for a house that was a refuge,” Sturgess recalls. “A comfortable place where they could come home and just be themselves after their busy work days.”
